Recirculation blower for the fuel cell

The Cross-Blower is a recirculation blower for the polymer electrolyte fuel cell based on the media gap motor. This high-speed centrifugal blower achieves the highest efficiencies on the market while also incorporating the function of a water separator.

Since the medium (in this case: water, hydrogen and nitrogen) is hermetically separated without the use of dynamic seals, …

from the electrical parts, is conducted through the motor, the concept of the MSM can show all its strengths at the same time. The simple design, the safety principle and the high efficiency (best-in-class) – of both the turbomachine and the MSM – promise low manufacturing costs and the smallest possible installation space.

In addition, there is an integrated droplet separator which, on the one hand, prevents water droplets from damaging the compressor wheel and, on the other hand, separates the water from the anode circuit.

The first prototype was developed in a ZIM project (2020-2022) together with the Center for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT) and the Institute for Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics (TFD) at Leibniz University Hannover. The Cross-Blower® is currently being further developed for series production.
